[...] I’m 30 years old, from Salt Lake City, Utah, and am currently living in Grecia, Costa Rica with my wife and two little girls (ages 6 and 4). We decided to move to Costa Rica for a number of reasons, including the great climate, the chance to experience a different culture and learn a new language (Spanish), and an excuse to take life at a slower pace. For a more detailed response about why we moved here, check out the post on my blog entitled “We’re Moving to Costa Rica” [...]

At the end of 2002 we moved our family to Oaxaca, Mexico for six months. We rented out our home here and I taught online classes to fund our experience. We rented a three-story spacious home there, enrolled our four of our children in public schools there (the youngest turned 3 while we were there), and soaked up the culture with weekly excursions. Oaxaca is rich with archaeological sites and native artisans. Our purpose was to learn spanish, experience a different culture, and help our children learn that there is more to the world than Bountiful, Utah. We each took a suitcase and the children took their instruments (violins and a flute). We left my wife's instrument home (she plays the marimba). It turned out to be a great experience and valuable investment (one we will always remember). We anticipate our next adventure, which may come next year (2010).

Hey you guys - I didn't realize you were moving until I saw your e-mail about your yard sale - WOW! It sounds like a great adventure, to say the least, and it also sounds like you've done all your homework to get ready. Lizzie has been researching Costa Rica for the past 5 months for a huge original research essay she is doing in her INternational Baccalaureate program, so she will be interested in talking with you, I'm sure. Good luck with everything - simple is better!

Brandon! I am so happy for you. I was just checking out facebook and saw you and your beautiful family. I thought I would take a look and wow, what a change in your life. As I have sat here reading everything, I was in tears thinking about what a wonderful time you will have. Maybe someday I will have the courage to do this! I have always wanted to travel.
Best wishes!

Brandon and Jennifer, I am so proud of you for having the courage to try new things. What an inspiration you are to the rest of us. I just thought of a couple of sayings I read years and years ago.

"The only difference between a rut and a grave is dimension"

"It's only the view from where you sit
that makes you feel defeat, Life is full of many aisles,
So why don't you change your seat?"

After I had decided to come to this country and had obtained my visa from the American Embassy and jumped through all the hoops, I went into work to clean out my desk. It was at that point that the reality of what I was doing really hit me and a wave of terror hit me. I looked at my desk calendar and there was a quote from Samuel Johnson, that stated:

"Nothing would ever be accomplished if all possible objections must first be overcome". As you know I got on the 'plane. I did have a second moment of fear in flight but I played the scripture game, my flight number was 121, I read psalm 121. It calmed and helped me for years.

Good luck my darlings!
